Welcome to the 2019-20 Scouting Season!

Welcome back to school and the start of what is shaping up to be an amazing Scouting year for the Pack 3 Cub Scouts. We have some exciting new to share with you:

  2. We have our first Camping trip at Camp Pouch in Staten Island scheduled to start directly after the Pack meeting and last through Sunday morning, the 15th. This coincides with the Staten Island Adventure Day (details here) on Saturday the 14th.
  3. We have more help this year! Cristina is volunteering to help make our Pack meetings fun and ensure we have a great potluck at each meeting and Pam is helping to plan our outings and community events. Thank you!
  4. Our calendar is published for the full year and includes all Pack Meetings, Den Meeting blocks, camping trips and community events. You can view it online here.

We are also still growing our dens and could use your help in recruiting new members, especially in the lower grades (Lions, Tigers, etc). Please email [email protected] with any interest or come to the Pack Meeting on Friday the 13th!

We are super excited to announce that Fraunces’ Tavern Museum has generously provided us with use of their beautiful “Flag Room” for our initial Pack Meeting and Bobcat Advancement ceremony on Friday, October 26th at 5:30.  This will be a PotLuck, so your Den Leader will be reaching out for some help organizing a nutritious meal for the scouts.

Spring 2018 Events and Updates

Happy Spring! I wanted to share some announcements & exciting activities planned this season for Pack 3.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

It all starts with our April Pack meeting this Friday, 4/20 @ 6PM EST at Zac’s Office:

PLEASE NOTE: the meeting will NOT be at the Trinity parish center due to a schedule conflict. Zac has been kind enough to host it the meeting at his office  The address is:

30 Vesey Street, 9th Floor
at the Corner of Church and Vesey

We look forward to seeing you all there and catching up on what each of our dens have been doing.

Scoutbook – Scouting App

We’re excited to share that we have signed our Pack up for a new online scout app called Scoutbook.com.  Scoutbook will allow both families and leaders to follow advancements, pack activities and scheduling. It will also provide us options for improved communication from our leadership.

You’ll be receiving a welcome email this week prior to the pack meeting and we’ll do a quick demo of Scoutbook at the meeting itself.

Activities coming up on our calendar:

•  4/28 Camping trip / Day Hike at Camp Pouch in Staten Island

This will be our first outdoor outing of the season. The plan is to do a day trip on Saturday 4/28 which will include a hike and activities focused on requirements for the outdoor based loops for each den. We have reserved a campsite to camp overnight on saturday night for those who want to camp.

• 5/12 (Saturday) Cub Activity Day @ Camp Alpine in Alpine, NJ

Spring Cub Activity Day: Rebels vs Empire.  This is a Star Wars themed activity day where the scouts get to experience a variety of Alpine’s activities (including the Indoor Rock Climbing Wall!).  It happens rain or shine.  Several of our scouts participated in last years and they had a blast.

• 5/28 – Pack 3 Memorial Day BBQ on Governor’s Island

If you are in town on Memorial Day, please join us for a BBQ on governor’s island.  We’ve reserved a grill for the day, so there will be hot dogs, hamburgers and undoubtedly S’mores as well.

• 6/2-6/3 and 6/9-6/10 – Family Fun Camping Weekends @ Alpine

Alpine Scout Camp hosts 3 Family Fun Camping Weekends that are focused specifically on Cub Scouts and their families.  Alpine is a great place for family campaign as the camp sites have platform tents with cots & mattresses in them.

The Saturday program of each weekend includes rock climbing, archery, the BB Gun Range, games and swimming.

Meals are provided on Saturday and Sunday in the Alpine Dining Hall.

As we know the spring schedules of most of our boys is busy with baseball and other activities, we are currently planning trips on both weekends to helpfully give everyone a chance to join one (or both) weekends.

SUMMER CAMP

Week of 7/23 Manhattan Council Day Camp @ Central Park Zoo

Each summer the Big Apple District holds a Cub Scout Day Camp for a week @ the Central Park Zoo. The camp takes place from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM Monday-Friday. The camp is open to Cub Scouts & siblings (1st Grade fall 2018-4th grade).   The campers do a variety of activities including games, hikes in Central Parks, sports and several activities involving the Zoo.

The activities also give them a chance to work on requirements for their advancement in the 2018-2019 scout year.  The cost is $275 for the week, which includes two t shirts and a boxed lunch each day.  You can read more about it on the council website.

CAMP POUCH DAY CAMP

The Greater New York Council runs at a day camp at Camp Pouch in Staten Island.  The camps run weekly starting on 7/2 and ends on 8/24.  The cost is $325/week for single week with discounts added for multiple weeks.  Pouch Day camp activities include swimming (lake), fishing, rock climbing, archery, hiking, sports, games, crafts, etc.  The camp is open to boys and girls 1st-7th grades.

As of right now, there is no transportation provided to and from the camp.  That said, if there is enough interest, we’ll investigate possible transportation options.

I look forward to seeing you all on Friday and to a great Spring with you and your boys.

November Pack Meeting and Calendar Updates

Pack 3 is hosting its November Pack meeting on Friday, November 10th from 6:00 PM until about 7:15.  Update: the meeting is being held at the Packet offices at 30 Vesey Street, 9th Floor at the corner of Church and Vesey Street.

We have several new Dens to introduce and many first time scouts, so it should be exciting.  The following Dens have been formed and will be in attendance:

  • Lion Den 1
  • Tiger Den 1
  • Wolf Den 1 and 2
  • Bear Den 1
  • Webelos Den 1

In total, we have 25+ scouts and parents, so it will start to get a little tight.  Scouts will be sitting on the floor and parents will be given chairs.  We will be ordering pizza have some snack and water available.  We plan to feed the scouts and don’t usually have much extra for parents – sorry!

Also, we’ve updated our calendar on our website, located at https://www.downtownscouts.org/calendar/.  We have included a link to the ICS file so you can add/import it into your calendar (e.g. google calendar, apple/iphone calendar, etc).

Pack 3 is excited to announce that its 2017 Open House will be held on October 6, 2017 from 5:30PM until 7PM at the Trinity Church Parish Center.  The Wolf and Bear Den members have organized an exciting evening to welcome the community to the new scouting season and to introduce new scouts to the Pack 3 program.  They will showcase their full uniforms and perform a flag ceremony to start off the meeting.

We will be:
